Confidence and Self-Esteem

Self-Confidence: A person's belief in their abilities, judgement and powers.

Self-Esteem: A person's opinion of themselves, how they feel about their sense of self-worth, self-respect and personal value.

People often think that confidence and self-esteem are the same thing. There is a difference though. Someone can have high self-esteem but low self-confidence in a particular area, for example they value themselves as an individual but lack confidence in the workplace. Likewise, someone can be extremely confident when on stage but in other areas of their life feel worthless.

Self-esteem is how you regard yourself and how willing and able you are to interact with the world around you, to do the things you want to do, say what you want to say and feel comfortable with who you are.

Self-esteem is the broader picture. It encompasses self-confidence, the things we believe we can do and accomplish, but it also includes other areas such as how we feel about ourselves, our body perception, how we behave towards others and how they respond to us. People often compare themselves to others in terms of appearance, achievement, beliefs, wealth, emotions, behaviours, etc. Your self-esteem depends on whether you do this in a positive, neutral or negative way and this is often done unknowingly.

Self-esteem together with self-confidence and self-respect are all necessary in order for us to grow and achieve self-actualisation (the desire for self-fulfilment). Our levels of self-confidence and self-esteem influence nearly everything we do, from working to socialising, how content we are and how at peace we are within.

Both self-confidence and self-esteem are learned attitudes and as such can be re-learned. Children aren't born with low self-esteem or lacking in confidence; over time this can be enhanced or knocked. If someone looks up to you or respects you, chances are you'll have a higher self-esteem than someone who is always being put down and criticised. For those who have received plenty of positive encouragement throughout life, self-esteem tends not to be an issue whereas for those who have had a significant amount of negative conditioning, their self-esteem can diminish.

There are numerous situations where a lack of self-esteem or low confidence can affect us. For some this may be when we meet new people, at job interviews, suffering from exam nerves or anxiety related to public speaking. Others are maybe shy or fear rejection, criticism or commitment.

Hypnotherapy is an effective tool to help boost self-confidence and regain your self-esteem. Combined with NLP techniques, attitudes, thoughts and behaviours can be changed to promote positive personal growth. Once confidence and self-esteem are improved, motivation can also be increased.

I personally find this area one of the most rewarding to treat. Benefits and improvements are often seen relatively quickly and these can have knock-on effects elsewhere in the client's life. Many of my clients have gone on to secure jobs, achieve promotion, meet partners and simply feel much happier with life.
