Depression: a psychological disorder that affects a person's mood changes, physical functions and social interactions resulting in severe despondency and dejection, accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.

It is not unusual to feel 'depressed' at some point in your life. We can all have days where we feel low or a bit down. Provided you pull back out of these lows or they don't continue for any length of time, that's okay. This is not the same as having a depressive disorder.

If however, the depressive condition continues and starts affecting your life in various ways, maybe it's time to seek help. Depression can take on many forms including major depression, dysthymic disorder, bipolar disorder (or manic depression) and postnatal depression. It differs in severity from person to person and from time to time.

If you suspect you may be suffering from depression, it's important to see your doctor. The therapy I offer is complementary to any treatment or advice recommended by your GP.

So what causes depression? Research shows that depression may occur due to a combination of psychological, biological and hormonal factors. In addition, traumatic events such as divorce or loss of a loved one can cause the onset of depression. The psychological factors include thought patterns, personality type, particularly those who may be predisposed to negativity and those lacking in confidence and self-esteem. Biological influences such as levels of serotonin within the brain can affect thoughts and behaviour, as can levels of hormone fluctuations, particularly cortisol.

Depression manifests itself in various ways. There may be a loss of interest or enthusiasm in things that were once pleasurable, a change in appetite, fatigue, lack of concentration, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and irritability, feelings of negativity, sadness, restlessness, emptiness and suicidal thoughts. In addition, there can be physical symptoms such as an increase in headaches, digestive problems, aches and pains and a lack of energy.

It is only in recent years that hypnotherapy is becoming more widely recognized and accepted as a highly effective way of helping those with depression. Research is indicating that hypnotherapy, together with other psychotherapy techniques can have a profound effect on changing thought patterns, feelings and behaviours of those with this psychological disorder.
